The $3 U.S. Gold Coin, sometimes called the $3 Princess, was designed by James Longacre and minted from 1854 through 1889. The obverse contained the head of an Indian Princess and the reverse a wreath with the denomination and the date. While there were more than 160,000 minted in 1854, the coin was never very popular and in most years fewer than 10,000 were coined.
