American Eagle Gold Coin Investing
American Eagle Gold Coin
The American Eagle Gold Coin has become one of the leading gold bullion investment coins since being authorized in 1985 by the Bullion Coin Act. One of the requirements imposed by the Act is that all American Eagles must be minted from "newly mined domestic sources", meaning not only that the gold used must be mined in the United States, but also that gold already held by the government can not be used.
The American Eagles are made of 22 karat gold, which is about 91.67% pure gold. Copper and silver make up the other 8+% of the Eagle. Their addition provides added durability to the coins, helping resistance to scratches.
The elegant design of the Eagle's obverse comes from the Augustus St. Gaudens design originally found on the $20 double eagle of 1907-1933. The reverse features a nest of American Eagles, meant to symbolize family tradition and unity.
The American Eagle Uncirculated Coins in both gold and platinum are available in one- tenth, one-quarter, one-half and one ounce sizes, as well as a complete four-coin set containing one coin of each size. The proof versions may be purchased directly from the mint, but the uncirculated coins and sets are available from most major coin and precious metals dealers, including APMEX, as well as brokerage houses and participating banks.
