The U.S. Mint began issuing the Presidential $1 coin series in 2007. Each year, four presidents will be commemorated with their own coin. Though gold colored, these coins are actually made from copper, zinc, manganese and nickel.
While collectors looking for gold presidential coins might be happy with the U.S. $1 coins, investors and gold coin collectors will probably prefer the Presidential Spouse Gold Coin series. The coins are minted in both proof and uncirculated condition and have a limit of 40,000 pieces. Customer demand determines the number of each condition minted.
On the other hand, the Gold Presidential Spouse Coins are one half ounce of 24 karat gold and have a face value of $10. 2007 marked the initial year for the series and coins commemorating Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Dolley Madison were issued. Jefferson's coin features Liberty on the obverse, since he wasn't married.
2008 brought coins for Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Andrew Jackson’s Liberty, and Martin Van Buren’s Liberty.
